Our Wamuran plumbers handle the whole drain on the property side. This page covers the warning signs, where your responsibility ends, and what you can legally do yourself before we arrive.

Signs You Have a Blocked Drain
A drain is blocking when the sink empties slower than it should, a second fixture gurgles as one drains, a sewer smell builds, and water starts lifting into a basin. Each sign points at the same fault:
Slow draining
The kitchen sink usually goes first, because fats and food scraps settle in its trap fastest. New traps and connections are on our kitchen sink installation page.
Gurgling elsewhere
Air trapped ahead of a blockage escapes up through the nearest water seal, so a gurgle in the shower while the sink empties is one fault, not two.
A sewer smell
Waste sitting where it should be moving gives off a smell near a floor waste or out at the tank.
Water backing up
A bowl filling instead of emptying means the line downstream is full. A toilet doing it belongs to our toilet repairs team.
The gully running
An overflow relief gully is the outdoor fitting built to spill first, so water rising out of it means the line behind it is blocked.
Most blockages come from a short list of causes. Grease, hair and soap scum, wet wipes, small objects dropped down a waste, and tree roots finding a joint on an older line account for nearly everything we clear.

Why Unblocking a Drain Is Licensed Work
Queensland requires a licensee for the job, because clearing blocked sanitary plumbing or drainage counts as minor work. Minor still means licensed, so the clearing itself belongs to a licensed plumber, not an owner with a coil.
The paperwork side is simple. A permit does not apply to minor work, and no Form 4 goes to the QBCC afterwards, so nothing official stands between the call and the fix.
Below ground, the rules tighten further. Drainage work under the surface falls to a drainer's licence, and clearing a house drain at an access point or at the tank sits inside that class of work.
Keeping the job licensed pays off later, too. A person with the right licence does work that meets the standards that apply, and that matters if drainage fails and an insurance claim turns on how the job was done.

Which Part of the Sewer Is Yours
You own the private drain running from your fixtures out to the sewer connection, and the main beyond that point is the water utility's. Unitywater keeps the main; everything on the property side belongs to the owner, drains included.
Queensland law also puts a duty on owners: keep the plumbing and drainage at the premises sound and working. That duty runs the full length of a private drain, and it does not pause for a rental.
A roof water pipe discharges to stormwater, never to a sewer line. One wired into a waste line can flood a bathroom on a dry day.
A drain shared by several properties is a special case. If the owners involved cannot reach a fair arrangement, the local council may carry out the repair and bill each property its share, recoverable as a debt.
This locality adds a wrinkle. Unitywater's public sewer layer shows no sewer mains running through it, so households treat waste on site. The owner's drain runs the whole way out to the tank and trenches.

What You May Do Yourself
The unregulated jobs stop at two. An owner may clean the grate that covers a drain trap at ground level, and may renew the caps on the inspection points beside it. Everything past that pair is licensed work.
The grate
Lift it, hose it off, and set it back so the trap underneath can take water freely.
The caps
A cracked or missing cap on an inspection point is a do-it-yourself swap; the QBCC treats the job as unregulated.
The gully
Rake leaf litter and mulch back from the overflow gully so it can spill if the line ever blocks.
While you wait
Stop running water into any fixture that feeds the blocked run, because every litre adds to what has to come back out.

Tree Roots and Long Acreage Drains
Acreage drains around Wamuran carry their own signature: a long run from house to tank, tall trees standing over the line, and clay that holds water long after the rain stops. Roots hunt out the joints on those long runs, and a drain that ran clean for years starts collecting calls once a tree has worked into a joint.
Wet ground changes the diagnosis as well. A trench that keeps ponding after rain on the creek-flat clay points to a saturated absorption field rather than a blocked pipe, and the two need different fixes.

Drain Questions We Get Asked
Call (07) 3523 7172How do I know if my Wamuran drain is blocked?
Water going down slowly at the kitchen sink is usually the first sign. Add a gurgle from the shower, a sewage smell inside, and water lifting into a basin, and the line is blocking. Water spilling at the outside gully is the same fault at ground level.
Who is responsible for a blocked drain outside my home?
The owner carries every pipe from the fixtures up to where the main takes over, and Unitywater looks after that main. No reticulated sewer reaches this locality, so the owner also carries the tank and the trenches on the block.
Is my blocked pipe on the sewer or stormwater side?
Two different systems. The sewer takes waste from a toilet, shower, basin or laundry tub, and stormwater carries rain off the roof and out of the yard. Rainwater pipework off the roof ends in stormwater, never in a sewer line.
Can I unblock a drain myself?
No, the clearing is licensed work. Queensland lists unblocking a sanitary drain as minor work, so a licensed person does it. An owner may hose out the grate covering a trap at ground level and swap the caps on the inspection points beside it, and that is the whole of the owner's list.
Is a blocked toilet an emergency?
Yes, on a Queensland rental at least. Tenancy law lists a blocked or broken toilet among the urgent repairs a landlord has to arrange. Ring (07) 3523 7172, and our emergency plumber page covers the rest of that class of fault.
